Washein's aim is to introduce people around the world with the most beautiful crafts from the native Wayúu tribe of Colombia. Its product are straw hats and bags and are carefully handwoven by Wayúu artisans in Colombia.

Washein was founded by Claudia Patricia Henríquez Iguarán from the Urariyú clan. Before Claudia launched Washein, she took over the direction of the Nazareth Hospital in 2012. During this time, she used to visit often the Indigenous communities - a population which is very wise and has an ancient and ancestral wisdom that enriches anyone who is ready to listen to them and put all that knowledge into practice. It is from them that while Claudia was working as Director of the Hospital of Nazareth, she saw the need for Indigenous patients with Tuberculosis after having completed phase one of the treatment, to feel productive to support their children and continue to contribute to their families. This is why at that time while serving as director of the Nazareth Hospital, she formulated a small productive project called "Einaá Eiyajaa" which means "Weaving to Heal".

In January of 2017, Claudia decided to start Washein while serving as a doctor. Little by little she began to spend more of her free time organising and finding a way to achieve it, but this time starting with artisans from the communities near the Serranía de la Macuira. She started Washein with the aim of supporting them in the commercialization of their handicraft products, she established a costing study with them so they were able to obtain a fair profit from them and in this way contributing to the improvement of their quality of life and health.

The artisanal hats and basket bags are 100% handmade by Wayuu artisans that Claudia has personally known since her childhood. By creating awareness and social responsibility, we value their skills and honesty in each work done with much love, but also with much effort and dedication. Every single hat and bag is especial, made and painted by hand. The artisans are involved in all the process, from dying the straw filaments, to carefully weaving the hats and bags and finally trimming and cleaning them. The pompons that decorate them are weaved by a group of Wayúu women from a different community, that live in Riohacha, the capital of La Guajira.
