NAE is a Portuguese high-quality vegan footwear brand launched by Paula and Alex Pérez in 2008 with a vision of creating ethical and ecologically friendly footwear and the principle »No Animal Exploitation«, which is also where the brand’s name is derived from. The brand’s designs are taken from contemporary fashion trends, ranging from the classic court shoe to the heavy-duty combat boot while always remaining suitable for everyday wear.
NAE’s partner factory specialized on manufacturing the highest quality shoes is located around 40 kilometers outside of Porto - Portugal, fairly manufacturing up to 350 pairs of shoes daily for NAE and other clients. 30 employees work on 500 square meters in offices and on production lines. This manufacture was one of the firsts to recycle used car parts into new materials for shoe manufacturing. In addition, the factory itself recycles all of their material clippings for various applications. To keep transport emissions low, all materials are sourced from the European market, with the exception of Piñatex, which is imported from the Philippines.

100% VEGAN & ECO-FRIENDLY MATERIALS
Unlike conventional vegan shoes made of virgin plastic, NAE’s shoe collection is not only 100% vegan but also made from eco-friendly vegan leather alternatives. For example, NAE’s best-selling range is made from Piñatex – an incredibly durable fabric made of pineapple leaf fibres. The leaves – which are normally discarded – are taken from pineapple harvests and processed, with any unused fibres then redistributed to the fields as fertiliser. It’s a completely earth-friendly process and the company responsible are working with pineapple farmers to add a whole new income stream to their businesses.
NAE also uses organic cotton which, unlike regular cotton, is grown without the use of chemicals and is irrigated using 80% rainwater. Being a Portuguese brand, NAE also uses cork – an incredibly durable and eco-friendly material as well. It is harvested from cork oak (or Quercus suber) trees. Cork farming actually has a negative carbon footprint, meaning that using it for our products has an incredibly positive impact on the planet. It’s waterproof, hypoallergenic, and soft to the touch, making it virtually perfect.
To create their vegan leather, NAE uses a special blend of microfibers, including cotton, polyester and nylon, all of which are recycled when possible to create a strong yet lightweight material for their shoes. In 2019 they also launched their RE-MOVE PROJECT, a line of with two sneaker styles featuring an upper made from plastic removed from the ocean.
