100% processed by hand by indigenous people who live in harmony with Mother Nature (Pachamama), alpaca outperforms many other high-quality fibers, making it a perfect material for spring. Here you will find why alpaca is one of the greenest fibres on Earth and a carefully curated range of Peruvian alpaca wool sweaters and cardigans inspired by the spirituality of indigenous people.
Nature could not have designed a better natural fiber than alpaca wool. The indescribable comfort of alpaca wool is due to the softness, moisture and texture of the fibre.
It has unique thermal properties due to its microscopic air pockets. Alpacas have lived at altitudes ranging from 2,500 to over 4,500 meters above the sea level in the Andes for thousands of years, and must be protected from extreme temperature and weather fluctuations. Thus, this noble fiber has certain special properties. This allows you to breath through it on warm days, and likewise, trap body heat in cold weather. The comforting warmth comes from the first-class thermal properties of alpacas.
The alpacas have also developed a silky, ultra soft, hypoallergenic and durable fiber, and warmer, yet lighter, than traditional wool. Our beautiful and truly unique alpaca sweaters from our German creator ACHIY use 100% certified baby alpaca wool. Baby alpaca wool comes from the underside of the alpaca’s neck, where the fleece is the finest and softest. The age and the specific part of the body that is shaved, make baby alpaca wool even softer and cozier than normal alpaca wool.
Alpacas spend their entire lives wandering freely in their natural habitat, mostly from the Bolivian and Peruvian Andes Mountains. When late spring arrives in the Andes, indigenous people obtain high-quality alpaca fiber (the shearing season is between November and March, late fall in the Northern Hemisphere). Alpacas are gently shorn by hand by the indigenous farmers only once a year. Unlike cashmere goats, alpacas don’t destroy the terrain when they graze as their hooves are softly padded, and they produce more fluff, too!
These creatures are so much gentler to their ecosystem than other kinds of animals that bear wool: with their soft feet, alpacas can explore their environment without making changes to the landscape. Their grazing habits don’t destroy the root systems of the plants they consume, they drink less water than other wool. While alpacas don’t usually enjoy the gently shearing process itself, they are noticeably more comfortable after their annual “haircut”.
Once the fiber is collected it is then hand sorted by experienced indigenous people, obtaining 15 natural und undyed shades. Because alpaca is naturally free of lanolin and other oils found in sheep’s wool, no harsh chemicals are needed to process alpaca fiber, making alpaca ranching 100% natural and safe for the environment. The wide range of natural colours offered by the wool requires less dyeing. This unique property results in a reduced impact on our environment and nature.
As a highlight, our German creator’s wool is naturally dyed from plants in the Andes to experience the real purity, making these Peruvian alpaca sweaters and cardigans 100% biodegradable. These incredibly beautiful and unique sweaters are certified by the Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX®. This standard is a global independent testing and certification system for raw, semi-finished and finished textile products at all stages of production. The certification proves that your piece of art is free from harmful substances.
Our wonderful German brand works together with two families in Cusco, Peru. All their softest sweaters are made completely in the family workshops of Rubén and Carmen – by hand with traditional knitting machines, 100% baby alpaca wool and with incredible passion. The unity of the family is at the forefront. Their manufacturing process involves multiple small individual steps. There is an expert for each of these skills. Their piece of arts only come to life when the individual craftsmanships are finally combined.
The traditional knitting techniques are passed on from generation to generation. For many textile artists it is a great dream, an honour, to be able to pass on their craft. Especially within the family. Our creator endeavors to keep exactly this tradition alive.
“For me it is very emotional if I can continue our traditional textile art. To see our photo together with our products, which we produce here in our home, is hard to put into words. Especially when we know that our story is told abroad.” - Rubén Caryamarca
Alpaca wool is a natural hair made of protein, is naturally biodegradable when disposed and blends back into the earth with a relatively short period of time in contrast with synthetic and other handmade fibers that take longer to degrade and have a negative impact on our environment.
For spring time ahead, nature gives us just the right answer with the divinely soft alpaca wool. It has the wonderful ability not only to warm, but also to cool comfortably. Mother Nature (Pachamama) has set it up in such a way that the alpacas can defy the cold and at the same time the intense sunlight in the harsh climate of the Andes highlands at an altitude of up to 5,000 meters. That is why the baby alpaca spring sweaters and cardigans from our incredibly dedicated brand are pleasantly soft and cool on the skin. Each cardigan and sweater is produced in batches of 50-70 pieces.
With your purchase on Urbankissed you contribute directly to the livelihood of local families whose greatest pride is to bring the divinely soft wool products into the world.
