Thesparkleffect was founded by Kelly and Arianne when they noticed how many people were using plastic glitter at events in Lisbon. After a market study, they found out that no local brand of biodegradable glitter existed in Portugal and made the decision to start their own brand while giving this innovative product a twist. They partnered with Bioglitter™, the world’s leading eco-friendly glitter brand and creators of the first plastic-free certified biodegradable glitter.

The idea of combining the glitter with a cool accessory was to make these biodegradable sparkles a conscious fashion statement, increasing discussion and awareness about how bad plastic glitter is for our planet. More than just creating a brand, they wanted to turn this idea into a movement!

Plant Based, Biodegradable Sparkles

Not everyone is aware of the huge damage and impact that common plastic glitter has on our environment and wildlife. When washed down the drain, glitter becomes a subset of marine plastic litter known as micro-plastic. Micro-plastic is found throughout the world’s oceans, from the surface to the deep sea.

But this cosmetic glitter is from Bioglitter™, made out of plant cellulose which is derived predominantly from eucalyptus trees, making this product biodegradable, vegan and marine friendly. Once the glitter enters the environment, microbes will start to consume the biodegradable content turning it into carbon dioxide, water, and biomass. The minimum time for the biodegradation is one month and depends on the local environmental factors, such as heat, moisture, and concentration of microbes.
