Wool rug woven flat on a traditional Mexican pedal loom. Directed by a family of traditional artisans of Teotitlan del Valle, village of the desert region of Oaxaca. Our craftsman works with his community and his family. The drawing is inspired by typical archives of the region. The drawings combine ancestral codes and modern graphics. The wool is colored using 100% biodegradable natural dyeing techniques. The pigments come from plants, tree bark or local insects, ancestral local know-how passed from generation to generation.

The carpets are ready to place as entrance, foot of sofa or bed or in wall decoration.

COUTUME

Coutume

Paris, France

Shop Owner: Céline Gaiardo

On Urbankissed since: 2019

Based in Paris, Coutume studio designs interior decoration items together with artisan communities based in Guatemala and Mexico, working with natural dyeing techniques and without any machine. Our house collections are handmade and at a fair price, respecting ancestral know-how. The pieces come from these collaborations, between modernity and tradition.

Custom goes looking for unique manufacturing workshops and techniques. We are inspired by textile archives, old and rare fabrics, selected and reworked with care, for exceptional interiors.

About the founder: After studying fashion design in Paris, Céline Gaiardo worked as a textile designer in the luxury ready-to-wear segment at the Louis Vuitton creation studio and then in the textile craft sector. For two years, she designed the collections for an association of artisans in Guatemala and discovered the textile wealth of these regions of the world. Together, they work to preserve the tradition of belt-making, an economic source for many local women. Proud of the friendships created with these communities and the projects accomplished together, she decides to continue promoting the talent and stories of these artisans.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

I've known about Urbankissed for a while now and, I've been sourcing their page for sustainable clothing to add to my collection. They carry curated pieces by different brands from all over the world that sell unique, ethically-made clothing, and they help support myclimate.org with each purchase. The founder Sophie Brunner is also very lovely!
Literally one of the cutest ethical fashion marketplaces I’ve ever seen. Thanks for putting this together and the great customer service!
The work you are doing is remarkable, you should be super proud as a brand, already having 50+ beautiful brands in one place. A lot of research goes into seeking out the true sustainable brands, those whose morale’s and ethics are in line with your own, they are the people you truly want to be working alongside, and build a strong, lasting relationship with. Also, kudos to you for offsetting the carbon emissions on delivery! This is awesome, and something I’m sure your customer really appreciates.
